Vistage Chair
He started out studying business and started work with one of the old life assurance companies – Equity & Law (now long swallowed up by AXA). Specialised in company pensions, unit trusts and life assurance. Promoted young, given lots of responsibility. Started to lead a double life as a musician and finally realised the creative part of him had to be given its head.
At age 26 he embarked on a theatre degree. Met an inspiring Glaswegian (and reformed convict) called Jimmy Boyle, moved to Edinburgh and worked with him in his centre - The Gateway Exchange. Became a theatre director and formed the professional company there - Boilerhouse.
Over the next 18-19 years he grew the company into one of the main national theatre companies. As CEO and Artistic Director, he helped to produce, write and direct most of their work. These took place in a range of extraordinary locations both local and international ranging from a Pacific oceanfront to the glamour of the Formula 1 circuit in Monaco (and taking in the bowels of Glasgow's Kingston Bridge along the way) and include the largest ever single audience for a Scottish theatre company (11,000 on a beautiful evening in Angers, France).
During this time, he was a guest lecturer at The Royal Conservatoire and Queen Margaret University. He also served as a specialist advisor for The Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland), sat on the working party for the creation of The National Theatre of Scotland, and was a Board Member for the UK industry lead body The Independent Theatre Council.
His most recent (last?) artistic project was the creation of Feet First for Edinburgh's Hogmanay with over 175 artists contributing to an evening of outdoor entertainment on the 1st January 2009 for 15,000 people in Edinburgh's Old Town.
He became a business mentor for Scottish Enterprise in 2000, undertook Postgraduate study in Executive Coaching at Strathclyde University in 2006 and formed his own coaching and development company – Brightspace - in the same year. He works with CEOs and senior managers in this capacity. He also ran the national mentoring programme for the cultural sector for 10 years.
He was appointed as a Vistage Chair for Scotland in the Summer of 2010 and Chairs two CEO groups (V19 & V66). He's also been involved in the training of new UK Chairs and previously was a Best Practice Chair which involved him chairing a group of Vistage chairs in the South of England. In addition, he did some Vistage speaking in the UK and US with a session entitled Open Heart Surgery.
He's been fortunate to win some awards along the way including UK Chair of the Year and being nominated for The Cope Award, the highest global chair honour.
